Tempur-Pedic International (TPX)
Back on February 3rd, I highlighted TPX as a momentum stock due to its strong earnings momentum, fundamental growth, brand strength and new line of moderately priced beds that should appeal to a wide segment of consumers.
Since that time the stock has risen over 9% and is still gaining interest from analysts; recently receiving a Buy rating and upgraded target of $85 by Oppenheimer Analysts. After a 60 percent rise off of its lows in December, the question is whether Tempur-Pedic still has upside from here or if it’s due for a nap?
Recent Developments
Tempur-Pedic manufactures, markets and sells high-end beds made from a material that was originally manufactured to cushion NASA astronauts on their flights into space.
They operate in about 80 countries and continue to expand, with their emphasis being here in the US.
In my February 3rd momentum update, I noted the recent release of TPX’s ‘Tempur-Simplicity’ line, a lower cost line that doubles the size of their addressable market.
Since then the company held its 2012 Investor Day presentation on February 22nd, at which time executives offered investors and analysts quite a bit of information. I wanted to offer some of the details and highlights on what I was able to glean from the report.
The global mattress market is a 20 billion dollar a year industry and growing, with 6 billion in premium sales. The US represents roughly 6 billion of the total sales (both regular and premium) alone. Non-spring mattresses (Tempur type) represent about 30% of that total and are increasing. In fact, non-spring mattresses have been driving a large part of the growth in the past 3 years and Tempur is looking to capture that business.
In the US, Tempur-Pedic beds represent only 3% of the total marketplace, which means that 97% of the total market share goes to its competitors, but also implies that TPX has a large amount of business it can capture.
Tempur’s main focus is the US, but they are looking to expand their international segment over the next several years in addition to growing presence and sales here in North America. The CEO offered some very optimistic projections for growth over the next couple years. He based much of the projections on what he has delivered over the past 3 years since their last Investor’s Day and what he is experiencing in the market right now.
Back in 2009 the company projected sales of $2 billion with operating margin to be at 25% by 2014. In 2011 they were well ahead of those targets, earning $1.4 billion and already seeing operating margins at more than 24%. During this last call he upped the ante for TPX, now projecting Read more
How to Play the Texas Tea Momentum
By Jared A Levy, Zacks
In May 2008 a call from a major brokerage was heard round the world. It
was the “super spike” in the price of oil which called for prices to
dramatically increase from the $115 level to an unthinkable $150-$200 a
barrel. This call came from the same analyst that three years earlier
saw $100 barrel crude when sweet Texas tea was hovering close to $60.
The earlier call was also a somewhat unthinkable prospect.
Recently, we got another call from the same brokerage… just
a different analyst this time. The call isn’t quite the same,
but the idea is. Oil prices are expected to move higher. We will leave
the details of Iran or supply and demand out of this discussion and
focus on how we can best position our portfolio based on this move.
Of course you’ll need to agree with the basic thesis that oil
will be moving higher and have some faith in Goldman Sach’s and their
research.

MagicJack (VocalTec ltd)
MagicJack (CALL)
Almost a month to date, on January 10th I wrote about Magic Jack (CALL) first here as a Momentum Rank Buy. On that date, the stock was trading at roughly $13.50. Since then shares of the Magic Jack maker leapt 48% to a high of almost $20. I thought it would be a good time to revisit Magic Jack and explore where I see the stock headed now as it has settled down to the $17 level.
Obviously performance like this must be backed by fundamental data, which we are seeing. On January 19th the company announced they sold over eight million MagicJacks and the Board has increased the company’s share repurchase program up to $55 Million in common stock.
They went on to say that the amount of options outstanding has decreased to less than 1% of shares outstanding and the company has successfully extinguished all of the preferred like equity on its balance sheet as of yearend 2011. They noted that the balance sheet will be more transparent in the 2012 and we expect relatively few options outstanding by the end of year. CALL does not currently have any secured debt on its books.
What we do have is Oppenheimer Securities not only initiated coverage on this small cap, but started it with an outperform rating, which is a big positive and can be viewed as bullish going into an earnings report even after a big run. On top of that, Zacks Investment Research published a research report on February 1st, initiating the stock with an outperform recommendation and set a target of $20.30.
We do know that Magic Jack sold over 365,000 of its new MagicJack Plus devices between November 20th and December 20th. They are estimating 4q sales to come in around 55-60 million units, which would make for a very strong quarter. They also recently cancelled a secondary stock issue, which tends to be bullish as offerings dilute the existing shares. In addition, MagicJack also recently announced a share buy-back program.
Volume remains on the low side, which creates added risk and liquidity issues. Generally it’s a smart idea to scale back investments in any stock that trades volume below 500,000 shares per day on average. This stock certainly Read more
Would the IRS believe the BLS?
In a letter to clients this morning I addressed the seemingly positive jobs data we got this am. I thought I would share an excerpt with all of you:
-There is no doubt that the BLS jobs headline today was good with 243k jobs being added in January and the unemployment rate dropping to 8.3%.
There were however some serious nuances in the report that are not being given the attention they deserve. The largest being the fact that the BLS made some “changes” to their calculations and data sets which has serious ramifications on the numbers .
Here is a unedited paragraph from the report describing some of these “adjustments”:
“The adjustment increased the estimated size of the civilian
noninstitutional population in December by 1,510,000, the civilian
labor force by 258,000, employment by 216,000, unemployment by 42,000,
and persons not in the labor force by 1,252,000.
Although the total unemployment rate was unaffected, the labor force participation rate
and the employment-population ratio were each reduced by 0.3
percentage point.”
When you translate that into English, 216,000 of Read more
Momentum – TPX
Tempur-Pedic Inc
Tempur-Pedic International (TPX)
Given the current state of the economy, most consumers are more likely to be smart with their money and keep splurges to a minimum. One of the only areas that consumers might be willing to spend a little (or a lot) extra is on their mattress, especially if they are having a hard time sleeping due to increased levels of stress in today’s society.
According to the Better Sleep Council, the average person needs 7-8 hours of sleep a night, which equates to about 1/3rd of a person life being spent lying on their bed.
Moreover, a good, consistent night’s sleep is a key part of a healthy lifestyle, just as much as diet and exercise. It affects how you feel, your relationships, your productivity and your quality of life. While you sleep, your brain goes to work, consolidating the day’s learning into memory and reenergizing the body.
Given that universal need, TempurPedic claims to be the #1 recommended bed in America, which might just be the angle that is helping them to gain momentum in a space that is crowded with many choices and levels of quality. When you buy a TempurPedic, you know you are getting a quality mattress that “feels” a certain way. Now they are reaching out to even more of you… Read more
